We have a young male donkey born seven or eight months ago ,he lives with his mother Clementine and his Tia Juanita. We'll Juanita is in heat and he is chasing her around with his uh shall we say ding a ling all hanging out and we are concerned that she will get pregnant by him and she had a very bad delivery just two weeks before he ( Xoti ) pronounced Hotie. She had a stillborn mule baby that she had in her when we got her .she is still very young and she also prolapsed her uterus when thus all happened and we almost lost her.thanx to our wonderful Vet and his wife and daughters they were able to get her all fixed up but we were told not to let her breed again as this could happen again. So my question is, is Xoti capable of impregnating Juanita or is he still too young at eight months old? Thanx for any help here we need to know if we should split them up till she goes out of season or het gets fixed.also when should we do that to him? Thanx Freddie

In theory he's old enough - I've had 2 jennies become pregnant from a young colt about the same age, and I never saw him even looking at them! So it came as a complete surprise when the following year we got 2 little foals in quick succession. However, a young colt that we bought for breeding didn't produce anything until he was about 2 years old. So you never know.
But given his interest in his mother, and her history, I would separate them ASAP, and get him castrated.

I have to agree with landroverroy.I would separate him & get him castrated now before the worst happens!
